Owatonna at the Movies: Recommendation Schedule Hey, film buffs, do you have a movie you’d like to recommend to others? We want to know.
Our new feature, “Owatonna at the Movies” will highlight films that you, the reader, suggest for others to watch. It works like this: The People’s Press will solicit film recommendations from readers — the sort of film that you’ve watched recently or remember fondly from years past.
When you send in your recommendations, we ask you to include your name, your town, the name of the film and a paragraph about why you think others would enjoy the film. We will print the recommendations in the Lifestyle section.
But there’s a catch. The recommendations will be for films dealing with specific subject matter. Here are the upcoming subjects, the days will we print those recommendations and the deadline for submissions:
• What are the holidays without a few Christmas movies? And there are a lot of them. What’s your favorite Christmas movie? Let us know by Tuesday, Dec. 16, and we’ll let everyone know on Sunday, Dec. 21.
• Winter is upon us, and when the days grow short and cold, even the folks filled with the most Minnesota Nice can get, shall we say, less than nice. So what’s the remedy? A good laugh or two. So what’s your favorite laugh-out-loud movie? Let us know by Tuesday, Jan. 6, and we’ll let everyone know on Sunday, Jan. 11.
• In January, this nation celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, and February is Black History Month. So what is your favorite movie about race relations? Tell us your recommendation by Tuesday, Jan. 20, and we’ll print those recommendations on Sunday, Jan. 25.
• February, of course, is a time for lovers. Unfortunately, some of us have been unlucky in love. So here’s our request: Tell us your favorite Love Story or your favorite Love Stinks Story. Let us know by Tuesday, Feb. 3, and we’ll let others know by Sunday, Feb. 8 — just in time for Valentine’s Day.
And watch for our upcoming Oscar contest.
See you at the movies.

Jackson's Picks Here are a few forgotten Oscar winners that are well worth a second — or perhaps first — look. Jeffrey Jackson |
Readers' picks One great thing about the Academy Awards is that no matter what film wins or which actor takes home an Oscar, you’ll always agree with some of the picks and disagree with others.
